Cobweb Season Is Coming: Why Late Summer Brings Spiders to Highland Windows (And What to Do About It)

Every late August, homes across the Highlands and Moray suddenly sprout cobwebs around windows, frames and eaves. Here is why it happens, what those webs do to your property, and how to keep the glass clear.

Walk around any home in Inverness, Elgin, Nairn or Forres towards the end of August and you will notice something that was not there a month before: cobwebs. They appear around window frames, across corners of the glass, under sills, along gutters and around outside lights, seemingly overnight. It is not your imagination. Late summer really is peak web season in the north of Scotland, and it has a bigger effect on how your home looks than most people realise.

    1. Why Spiders Suddenly Appear in Late August

Most of the spiders you see around your windows have been there all summer, quietly growing. By late August they have reached full size, and the males begin roaming in search of mates, which is why they suddenly become visible. At the same time, the mature females build their largest webs of the year to catch as much food as possible before the colder months. The result is a burst of fresh webbing across the outside of homes right across the Highlands and Moray.

    2. Your Windows Are Prime Web Real Estate

Spiders build webs where the food is, and windows are perfect hunting grounds. Light from inside your home attracts flies, moths and midges after dark, so a web stretched across a window corner or outside light catches a steady supply of insects. Sheltered frames, sills, vents and the gap behind gutters and fascias offer protection from our frequent wind and rain, which is why webs cluster so densely around these spots.

    3. What Webs Actually Do to Your Glass and Frames

A web is sticky by design, and that stickiness works against your windows. Webs trap dust, pollen, harvest debris and dead insects, building up into grey, matted patches that cling to glass and frames. When rain hits them, the residue smears across the pane and dries into stubborn marks. Around white uPVC frames, old webbing can leave grimy shadows in the corners that make even a recently painted or new frame look tired and neglected.

    4. Bird Activity Follows the Webs

There is a knock on effect many homeowners never connect. Webs full of insects attract birds looking for an easy meal, and birds bring droppings, which are acidic enough to mark glass and etch into frames if left. Keeping webs under control around windows and eaves quietly reduces this problem too.

    5. Why Brushing Them Away Is Not Enough

Knocking webs down with a brush feels satisfying but rarely lasts. The sticky anchor strands remain on the glass and frames, giving the spider a ready made scaffold to rebuild on, often within a day. The smeared silk left behind also attracts dust. A proper clean removes the webs, the anchor strands and the trapped debris together, and washes the frames and sills where egg sacs are often tucked away, which makes rebuilding far less likely.

    6. The Pure Water Advantage in Web Season

This is where professional pure water cleaning earns its keep. The soft brush scrubs webs and silk residue out of frame corners, sills and vents, and the pure water rinse washes everything away without smearing, leaving glass and frames genuinely clean rather than just web free for a day or two. Because the pole system reaches upper windows, gables and the awkward spots above conservatories from the ground, the places you can never reach with a household brush get cleared too.

    Stay Ahead of the Season

Cobweb season runs from late August through October in our part of Scotland, so a clean at the start of it, followed by your regular round through autumn, keeps your home looking cared for right through to winter.

We clean windows, frames, sills and the web prone corners around them for homes across Inverness, Elgin, Buckie, Forres, Nairn, Dingwall and the surrounding areas, with regular rounds that keep the webs from taking over.
